Saving Money by Thrift Shopping or Consignment Shopping
For those of you who have never been Thrift Store or Consignment Store shopping. I am sure it is for various reasons; you are in for an adventure and a treat. Now if you have more money than the above average income and could care less if you save those pennies or dollars, then don't bother to read any further.
But if you are like the rest of us and either living on a fixed income or have a few children to feed and clothe, then read on!!
I say it is the thrill of the hunt and the aspect of saving money. Let me tell you about yesterday for example. Since I have quit smoking and yes, you can pat me on the back for that; I have gained some weight. We have a Holiday Party to go to and nothing in my closet is going to fit. Yes, I sew and can make an outfit, but it is nice to have something special. I was in a Thrift Shop and found a gorgeous, BRAND NEW, beaded top. This top in a regular store would have been minimum $65 - 80. I am not joking, but the sign said all red tagged items 99c. Guess what? This was red tagged and minus 10% for Senior Discount, plus tax of course. Bet you can't beat that!!
I do this all the time; in my living room I have a 3-piece Queen Anne Suite. This is sofa, love seat and wingback chair. I paid $500.00 for all three pieces. This was in a Consignment Shop. So it isn't just clothing, it can be anything.
Think of the decorator pieces you can find, vases, lamps, etc. Do any of you ever watch HGTV or TLC? There are several shows on there that show you what can be done with furniture items, art, fabric or just about anything. Design on a Dime comes to mind first; Then Trading Spaces. They take a $1000.00 and go out and buy and recreate items from thrift shops, consignment stores and discount stores to create a beautiful bedroom or living room or dining room. I will say I don't always agree on some of what they do, but that isn't the point. The point is they are showing the average person how to create for very little money. There are some shows that only use $500.
The most important thing is that you are using your imagination and creating for little or no money. I can remember what my sisters used to call my house. It was "Early Miscellaneous". Now it is called "Eclectic", but no matter what you call it, it is me and I am very proud of it. I created the rooms in my home and had a lot of fun doing it. I searched for the right rug, the right end table. I made my curtains and cornice boards.
Anyone of you can go to Babcock Furniture or Rooms To Go or J.C. Penney and buy your furniture and drapes or curtains and they have that perfect lamp. Congratulations! Now you have spent a lot of money and I am sure the room will please you, but wouldn't it please you more if you created it? And spent less money doing it.
You could also hire a decorator to come in and make the perfect room for you. Do you know where they shop for the perfect accessories? Yes, the thrift shops and consignment stores; and believe me they aren't going to tell you that. They are also going to charge you an arm and a leg for what may have cost next to nothing.
All I am asking you to do is to think about it. If you buy it at a thrift store or consignment store, the sale is normally final. But some have a return policy that if it isn't right; they will either exchange it, give you credit or take it back. Check with the Manager on the policy, never assume. If you still want the item and they don't have a return policy, you can always donate it back and take it off your taxes.
Before you buy anything, take the measurements of the space you have. Sometimes just hoping it will fit will work, but nine times out of ten it won't work and you will be disappointed.
